Eversource Energy warns that a current scam involves scammers saying they are from the company and demand instant payment for power bills.
“We’re always working to help our customers protect themselves against scams, which is especially important today as sophisticated scammers are trying to take advantage of the uncertainty and nervousness caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Penni Conner.
Conner said the company will never demand instant payment over the phone or ask for personal information in unsolicited calls, texts, or emails.
"We urge customers to remain vigilant and always remember, don’t panic, and don’t pay," she said.
- Some of the hoaxes to be on the lookout for include threats of immediate power disconnection or demands for payment.
- Currently, Eversource is not disconnecting any customers for non-payment during this emergency period.
- Other clues the callers are scammers are asking for payment in the form of gift cards or pre-paid debit cards, which the company does not accept as payment.
- Scammers have also been requesting a deposit to exchange a utility meter: Eversource has suspended all non-essential work, including routine meter changes, during the pandemic.
Eversource urges anyone who believes they are a target of improper solicitation to please alert local law enforcement and contact the company directly at 800-286-2000.
